Objective To study the distribution and correlation of the two viruses in the liver of patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Methods Immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization were used to detect the nucleic acids and antigens of HCV and the nucleic acids and antigens of HCV respectively, and further analysis was performed on the core antigens of hepatitis B and the tissues positive for hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAg) and HCV RNA Do the same piece of double-labeled staining. Results Most of HBV and HCV infected cells were distributed in different hepatic lobules or pseudolobules, respectively. Most of the infected cells did not infect the same cells even when they co-existed in the same lobules. Conclusion In the double infection of hepatitis B and C virus, the two viruses do not directly interfere with each other in most cells. The double labeling method can be used to analyze the relationship between viruses in overlapping infected tissues.
