牙签是东亚地区普遍使用的洁牙工具,但韩国多数饭馆中的牙签与中国不同,那就是牙签由环保材质制成,甚至可以吃。环保和动物保护风潮则是这种牙签在韩国风靡的主要原因。随着韩国养殖业的发展,食物残余渐渐成为许多养猪场不可或缺的饲料。但是,由于不少传统牙签被混入剩菜剩饭中,致使许多猪在食用后由于牙签戳伤内脏而死亡。随即有人提议,开发出能吃的牙签。1994年,首款淀粉牙签面世,并迅速风靡韩国。这种牙签由土豆、红薯或玉米淀粉制成,长度一般在6厘米左右,颜色为绿色或浅黄色。虽然硬度不如传统牙签,但这种牙签克服了传统牙签很难自然分解的弱点,入水10分钟就会变软。而且,由于其成分与红薯、土豆等相差无几,因此,即使人和动物吃下去也会被消化掉,不会危害健康。
