Tim: I always knew we were a fairly odd family. First there was me. Too tall. Too skinny[皮包骨的]. Too orange. My mum was lovely, but not like other mums. There was something solid[固有的] about her. Something rectangular[矩形的,成直角的], busy and unsentimental[不动感情的]. Her fashion icon was the Queen. Dad, well, he was more normal. He always seemed to have time on his hands. After giving up teaching university students on his 50th birthday, he was eternally[永恒的] available[空闲的] for a leisurely[悠闲地] chat or to let me win at table tennis. (plays table tennis with his Dad). And then there was Mum’s brother, Uncle Desmond. Always impeccably[无瑕疵地] dressed. He spent the days just, well, being Uncle Desmond. He was the most charming[迷人的] and least clever man you could ever meet. His mind was on other things, though we never found out what. And then, finally there was Catherine, Katie, Kit Kat, My sister. In a household of sensible[明智的] jackets and haircuts there was this, well, what can I call her, nature thing. With her elfin[小精灵般的] eyes, her purple T-shirts and her eternally bare feet, she was then, and still is to me, about the most wonderful thing in the world. All in all, it was a pretty good childhood. Full of repeated rhythms[节奏] and patterns. By the time I was 21, we were still having tea on the beach every single day. Skimming stones and eating sandwiches, summer and winter, no matter what the weather. And every Friday evening, a film, no matter what the weather. And then once a year, the dreaded[令人畏惧的] New Year’s Eve party…
  Tim: Wake up. Wake up.
  Mary: What?
Tim: Mary. Would you like to marry me?
Mary: Sh! Don’t be so selfish. I’m sleeping. It’s bad. Tim: Right. That went very well.
(Tim travels back) Tim: Wake up. Mary: What?
Tim: Wake up. Come and have a chat.
  Mary: Why?
Tim: I’ve got something important to ask you.
Mary: Can’t it wait till morning?
  Tim: Not really.
Mary: But I’m so comfy[舒服的]. I was having the loveliest dream. What is it? Why is there music on?
Tim: It’s got something to do with what I want to ask you.
Mary: Wait a minute. Romantic music. Guy with important question. Are you on your knees? On his knees. Were you so bored in the play you decided to ask me to marry you afterwards? Huh?
Tim: Something like that. Yeah. Exactly that. In fact, will you marry me? Any thoughts on the answer? “Yes?”“No?” “Get out of my life, loser,” they’re all possible.
Mary: I think I’ll go for...“yes.” Thank you for asking me. And thank you for not going for one of those melodramatic[戏剧性的] proposals[求婚] with lots of people around. I hate other people.
Tim: Me, too. Yuck. I’m just gonna turn off the radio.
  Mary: Okay. Good idea.
Tim: (to the musicians who are playing music outside the room) Sh! Thanks, guys. Sorry, she’s a bit tired. But we really appreciate[感激] it. (asks them to leave with gesture)
  sh(=hush/shh)“嘘”——示意安静、别做声
  yuck(=yuk)“呸,啐”——表示反感、讨厌
