This article describes several creative advances in plastic packaging and bulk containers (IBC) used for the transport of dangerous goods, namely the application of new materials and concepts of new packaging, the gradual adoption of packaging and reuse, and the increased possibility of applying recycled packaging . The impact of these developments on the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods and their implications as well as the role of the CEN and ISO standards under development are outlined. It also outlines the framework for the standards, measurement and testing procedures for the European program called CHEMPACK funded by the EC.
