Dichlorocarbene reacts with tetraphenylcyclopentadienone (1) to give CO and generate geminal dihalide (3), dichloroethylene oxide (4) and double bond adduct (5). The aromatic structure of carbonyl ylide and its “intermediary” conformation determine that the reaction is dominated by CO removal, followed by the electrocyclo-cyclization pathway.
