胡愈之同志漫长的一生中,抗日战争期间在南洋的流亡生活是带:有传奇性的。胡老身材矮小,组织能力却很强,思想敏锐,善于应变。1941年日军悍然南进,强攻新加坡,当时他在新加坡担任《南洋商报》总编辑,并和郁达夫、巴人等积极参加抗日宣传工作。新加坡沦陷前夕,在爱国华侨帮助之下,仓促乘小船驶离新加坡,朝当时荷属苏门答腊岛海岸流亡。同他一起出发的有郁达夫以及六七位从国内去的文化人,胡老的老伴沈兹九已先一天出发,相约在一个小岛石叻班让会面,沈兹九还带着她的女儿张绿漪。
