For a long time, domestic literature has always listed tomato as the host plant of Helicoverpa assulta, but the results of field investigation often contradict it. The purpose of this study is to clarify whether the tomato is a host plant of tobacco budworm. Laboratory tests showed that although adult tobacco budworm oviposition on potted tomato plants more, but whether it is with young leaves of tomato or potted plants, most of the newly hatched larvae died in the first year, the average survival time is very short, It will not cause any economic harm to tomatoes; even 3rd instar larvae raised with tomato fruits can not live to 6 years of age. According to the artificial feeding results, the lethal concentration of tomatoin to newly hatched larvae was 0.0744%, and the content of tomatoin reported in leaves and fruits was close to or above this level, which was the main reason why the larvae could not survive one. Field surveys also show that tobacco budworms do not harm tomatoes. Therefore, tomato is not a host plant of tobacco budworm. The records in the literature are likely to be mistranslated to Helicoverpa armigera.
