Oswaldo Roberto Clion, Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Brazil, recently announced that Bank of Brazil has been re-listed as a world-qualified bank after two years of profound crisis. It is also a symbol of the revival of the entire Brazilian financial community. Brazil Bank is the largest bank in Latin America. Since the 1970s, Brazilian banks have enjoyed rapid growth and now have assets of more than 50 billion U.S. dollars, ranking 19th in the world’s largest banks. At the end of 1982, the Brazilian economy was in a serious recession. Brazil’s banks ran into serious capital flight, foreign exchange was almost depleted, and it was difficult to pay the principal and interest of the foreign debt as they matured. Brazilian banks are being forced to postpone their development loans at branches in major Western cities such as New York, London and Frankfurt. Until March this year, the international credit activities of BNP’s foreign branches were almost at a standstill, and the deposit rate dropped drastically. It was generally considered by the international financial community as a lack of liquidity and was in a dilemma.
