Federal Republic of Germany in the 1980s around the historical policy launched a heated debate. The coalition government led by CDU / CCU proposed the neoconservative historical policy and was strongly opposed by the Social Democratic Party. The former emphasizes the reconstruction of national identity while the latter insists on making a critical interpretation of the history of the nation. Both sides disagree on numerous issues such as examining the history of the Nazis, constructing the National Museum, and commemorating the end of World War II. The nature of the confrontation between CDU and the Social Democratic Union and the Social Democratic Party in the field of history and policy is the competition for shaping the collective historical consciousness and reflects the strength and superiority of the left and right wings in different fields during this period.
