The model-based expert control system (MBEC) is an online dynamic optimization monitoring system. The phenomenological model is used to generate a large amount of information about the process state and predict the trend. Combined with the flexible rules, the plant constraints are considered to obtain its complex control strategy. In Kiruna (Sweden) put into operation in 1995, the new plant, LKAB uses advanced closed-circuit self-grinding with closed gravel grinding process. The new plant has a very high level of instrumentation. The control hardware consists of a distributed control system (DCS). The DCS is used by the operator to integrate DCS into the plant-level management information system (MIS). Before the plant was put into production, the modern MBEC system was embedded in the MIS by the author. It consists of several modeling and expert software modules: A phenomenological process model and a Kalman filter constantly evaluate the state of the process. An optimizer calculates the optimum ore quantity. The rules-based module generates production targets and The main setting of the process. The decision to install the MBEC system as an integral part of the new plant prior to commissioning illustrates the maturity of the technology that is largely designed and developed through the vast amount of hands-on knowledge gained from previous projects, without access to the plant this system. The viability and performance of a dynamically optimized system was confirmed by the previous author at the old election plant in Kiruna. A set of MBEC systems installed in three existing gravel-mill circuits improves quality (stable particle size distribution) and increases production by another 10%. In the existing flotation equipment is also installed on the modeling of limited online expert control system in order to stabilize the phosphorus content of concentrates and optimize the collector dosage purposes. Both of these goals have been achieved.
