从2003年年初,就不断传来Intel将推出新核心Prescott桌面型处理器的消息,而此款处理器的特性、正式推出日期以及详细的技术参数,也成了去年媒体猜测的热点之一。虽然去年后期Intel推出了带2MB三级缓存的P43.2XE来暂时压制住竞争对手AMD的Athlon64以及Athlon64 FX-5l两款桌面处理器,然而明眼人都看得出来,价格高昂的P4 3.2XE犹如天边的一道彩虹,很难走入主流的寻常百姓家;而Northwood P4 3.2G在同Athlon64 3200+的较量中也不能占到太多便宜,况且现有的Northwood核心P4频率提升的空间已经不多;这样,对于Intel来说,尽快推出一款价格适中,频率提升空间较大,同时在性能上可同AMD的K8核心处理器较量的新产品就成了当务之急。而Prescott核心P4正是能够满足这种需求的处理器。
