当很多美国人在感恩节那天看到烤好的火鸡时,觉得它已经很完美了.但是基因组科学家正寻找方法改进家养火鸡,让它生长得更快,肉质更好,并能抵御饲养环境下产生的问题.rn2008年,火鸡基因组计划启动,由明尼苏达大学和弗吉尼亚理工学院领导.这一计划已到了装配A,T,G和C的最后一步,并已经开始研发让饲养者选出更好的火鸡的工具.位于马里兰州贝尔茨维尔(Beltsville)的美国农业部农业研究院(U.S Department of Agriculture Research Service)的生理学家茱莉·龙(Julie Long)说:“有了基因组序列,我们就可以测量性状,这是一般的农场条件下很难做到的.”她也是火鸡基因组计划的成员之一.举个例子,疾病抵抗力和火鸡把饲料转化成肌肉的效率就是很难被测量的性状.“我们很容易找到哪些火鸡长得更大更快,但是还有很多性状我们测量不了.”这也是火鸡基因组计划启动的目的.
