京九铁路的客运于九月一日正式全线开通.这样,中国本世纪以来最大的铁路工程“八五”铁路建设的头号重点可谓大功告成.它对于我国的经济发展,对于香港的稳定与繁荣应该说是意义非凡的重大事件.而作为特区人来说最为关心的则是:这一事件将为深圳带来什么?京九铁路是一条位于京沪、京广线之间的,纵贯京、津、冀、鲁、豫、皖、鄂、赣、粤九省市的铁路大动脉,它经平坦开阔、水运发达的华北平原,跨越黄河、淮河,穿过大别山,再跨长江进入鄱阳湖平原,然后溯赣江而上,穿越九连山脉,沿东江而下至龙川、惠州,与广九线接轨后继至九龙,全线长2381公里,包括连接天津、武汉等重要城市的联程线共长2536公里.由于它与过度紧张与繁忙的京沪、京广、焦枝三大干线相平行,又位于我国生产力超前发展的沿海轴线和物产丰饶的腹地线之间,辐射区约50万平方公里,影响人口达1.2亿,故而具有成为全国性超级干线和重要经济走廊的可能性.

It extends down the Dongjiang River to Longchuan and Huizhou and connects with the Guangju Line to Jiulong, covering a total length of 2,381 km including the connecting route connecting important cities such as Tianjin and Wuhan 2536 kilometers.Because it is parallel with the over-strained and busy Beijing-Shanghai, Jingguang and Jiaozhi main lines, it is also located between the axis of coastal productivity and the rich hinterland of China’s productive forces.
