In clinical practice, unilateral peripheral vestibular function loss, the use of rotational or temperature stimulation to reduce its spontaneous nystagmus and its inhibition has been used as a test for signs and compensatory conditions. In many patients with peripheral vestibular disorders peripheral lesions recovered at the same time central compensation, can further reduce nystagmus. The author (1983) first reported the so-called ophthalmic reverse swimming, possibly as a method of discriminating between them. This article reports detailed data on contralateral eye movements obtained from another group of patients and presents a hypothesis as to why some peripheral vestibular diseases appear to be traveling backward, while others do not. Seven patients (2 males and 5 males) were observed with an average age of 38 years. Past history is unique. nervous system
