Objective: To investigate the morphological characteristics, natural life expectancy and evolution of lesions enhanced by MRI in multiple sclerosis. Methods: Twelve patients with multiple sclerosis who were clinically diagnosed were screened by MRI every month and followed up for 6 ~ 28 months. 291 lesions were obtained. Results: The majority of newly diagnosed lesions disappeared in 2 months with a half-period of 24 days. Most of the lesions with lesions longer than 10 mm were evolved from homogenous enhancement to annular shape, with or without enhancement four stages. 10% (29/291) of the enhanced lesions can not be displayed by the corresponding T2-weighted images. CONCLUSIONS: The study shows that after the appearance of newly-enhanced lesions, the lesions disappear and disappear with time, and no enlargement or fusion of the lesions occurs. T1-enhanced images are superior to T2-weighted images in indicating new lesions.
