德莱塞在二十世纪初期出版的两部长篇小说《嘉丽妹妹》、《珍妮姑娘》均反映了新的消费思想意识对人的影响。在美国社会由“生产型向消费型转变”[1]的历史时期,两位女主人公都勇于冲破传统清教思想的束缚,顺应时代潮流,从而成为新的消费时代的弄潮儿。
Dreiser’s two novels, Sister Carrie and Jeanne, published in the early twentieth century all reflect the human impact of the new consumer ideology. In the historical period of American society changing from “production to consumption” [1], both heroines have the courage to break the shackles of the traditional Puritan ideology and adapt to the trend of the times to become the beach-goers in the new consumption era.
