自从集装箱运输在二十多年前出现以来,一直在稳步地向前发展。由于集装箱运输具有迅速、方便和经济效益高等优点,在运输市场的竞争能力很强。运输企业为了获得更多的经济效益,都争着添置集装箱船,而且装载量越来越大。首批建造的全部框架 C—2级集装箱船,每艘只能装载226个35英尺集装箱,大约相当于350个20英尺的标准集装箱。在1970年建造的071级集装箱船设计装载量达到1500个20英尺的标准集装箱。1983年美国总统轮船公司建造的三艘新 C—9级集装箱船,每艘设计装载量增加到2500个20英尺的标准集装箱。目前 Container transport has been steadily moving forward since it appeared more than two decades ago.
