夔国为楚国所封,是楚嫡系。夔国文化属楚文化发展系统,即属早期楚民族文化的三峡类型。夔国文化以鼎、釜、鬲、甗四种陶炊器为主要特点,它形成的时代在夔被楚灭亡的春秋中期前段。所以三峡地区春秋中期以前普遍存在的四种陶炊器共存的一种遗存应属于夔国文化,而庙坪周代第二期、第三期遗存非“夔国文化的考古学证据”。夔国文化是在三峡地区特殊的人文地理条件下形成和判断的。它是研究三峡地区商周文化和探溯楚文化之源的重要部分。
