Scientists at the University of Rochester have measured perhaps the fastest transistor speed so far. One subgroup of the laser kinetics labs measured a rise time of 4.7 picoseconds (10 to 12 seconds, pico seconds) for gallium arsenide pass-through base transistors (PBTs). In the past, the shortest rise time of high-efficiency transistors was 9.6 picoseconds.
