In April 1944, the Japanese army launched “Operation No.1” aimed at opening up the mainland traffic line. The first phase of the campaign occurred mainly in central and western Henan Province, it is also known as “Henan Battle.” In the latter part of the battle, both China and Japan conducted a fierce battle of war in the Lingbao area at the junction of Henan and Shaanxi. After the Lingbao campaign ended, the Japanese army again opened up the Ping-han Railway and the Henan Battle officially ended. Some authoritative academic works believe that the battle in Henan lasted 37 days during which the Kuomintang army “lost 38 seat counties.” This statement is not accurate. The battle lasted 58 days, a total of 44 county-owned cities, count as if some county fell twice, a total of 50 times. By the time of the fall of Luoyang, the province totally occupied 36 counties.
