温室白粉虱对于不同种的植物和不同叶龄的叶片具有不同程度的偏好性.它们明显地偏好烟草、黄瓜、蚕豆及江豆的嫩叶,而不偏好蚕豆、江豆的老叶及青椒的嫩叶.行为研究表明在偏好的植物叶片上,粉虱停留的总时间及刺探的总时间明显地长于在不偏好的植物叶片上的相应时间.在不偏好的叶片上,刺探往往只持续2分钟左右,一般不超过5分钟.在偏好的叶片上,既有多次短时间的刺探,也有10分钟以上的刺探(+取食).形态研究表明,粉虱的口计一般需10~15分钟达到初皮都取食.刺探过程仅需10~15分钟.刺探可进一步划分为短于2分钟、深度约20~50μm的试验性刺探和长于5分钟的探查性刺探.试验性刺探是粉虱确定对宿主植物选择的关键过程,而叶表蜡层中的化学物质可能起重要作用.
