New lines of tomatoes cultivated with genetic engineering are antiviral and have resistance genes that are not infected by the virus. This major study, published in April 1988 in the journal Biotechnology, was completed by eleven scholars at Richard University, Nelson, and Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. This is the transfer of genes that control the production of virus epidermal proteins and some of the genetic material around these genes from the virus to the new line of genetically engineered plants.
