知识革命、知识经济、知识社会、知识共享,是20世纪末以来使用频率较高的词汇。在知识革命和知识经济的背景下,如何走向知识社会,如何实现知识共享,图书馆在其中可能而且应该扮演重要的角色。 2005年11月17日,在信息社会世界峰会突尼斯阶段会议上,联合国教科文组织总干事松浦晃一郎发表了题为《走向知识社会》的演讲,指出:“在社会发展的过程中,只有知识共享才是我们有效对抗贫困、防止重大疾病威胁人类健康、减少因自然灾害造成的重大人员伤亡并促进人类可持续发展的唯一途径。”我们正在推进社会主义和谐社会的建设,图书馆正是构建社会主义和谐社会的重要载体。2005年10月,上海市中心图书馆实现了向社区基层延伸的试点探索,这一生动的实践,正是走向知识社会的坚实步伐,也是把知识共享融入城市公共图书馆的建设实践,同样也是构建社会义和谐社会在图书馆发展中的有效载体。
