莫托萨拉铁锰矿床是一个具有层位稳定、形态规则、矿层单一、品位较富的铁、锰共生中型矿床,近年来随着矿区外围工作的不断拓展,尤其是大量的钻孔深部资料表明,铁、锰矿床具有稳定的层位,矿层与围岩产状一致,即使受到后期褶皱的影响,其矿层的底界也是十分清楚的,由滨海氧化沉积的铁矿层,过渡到铁锰条带层,再到浅海-中深海相的还原相含锰层,具明显的连续性的海进层序。其陆源海相沉积特征十分突出,但同时铁、锰矿在其形成过程中又受到火山热液活动的影响,又具有火山活动成矿的特征,因此该矿床应属“陆源及火山气液海相同生沉积矿床”。
