The new inertial measurement device introduced by Smith Industries of the United States allows system designers to increase product reliability by using laser technology, optical switches and fiber optics to reduce product costs. There are no moving parts in these parts, which replace conventional mechanical parts that are subject to wear and are expensive. The Smithsonian Aerospace team delivered the first Adaptive Flywheel Inertial Measurement Unit to Boeing Aerospace Electronics in the fall of 1990. This new inertial measurement device was developed for the flight control system of a light, outer-atmosphere missile. Light exo-atmospheric-layer missiles are part of the U.S. Department of Defense Star Wars program.
