竞技体育是我国体育事业的重要组成部分。为满足社会主义现代化建设的需要和人民文化生活的需要服务,同时,竞技体育也是培养人、塑造人的教育过程,是社会主义精神文明的重要内容。八十年代,特别是1984年以来,作为安徽省第二大城市的蚌埠,竞技体育有了长足发展,由1982年省五运会团体总分第五名,1984年省一青会第三名,到1986年省六运会、1988年省二青会均稳居第二名。其间,为国家输送了一批优秀后备人材,有的项目达到了全国水平,有的运动员还代表我国参加世界比赛,为国争光。如:足球项目,已被列为全国20个重点城
