1944年4月,侵华日军为了挽回战场上的颓势,发动了豫、湘、桂战役,而遭受进攻的国民党数10万大军望风而逃,一溃千里。中共中央、毛泽东深谋远虑,审时度势,走出了一步妙棋:发展河南,绾毂中原,准备大反攻的前进基地。这时,身为中共北方局代理书记的邓小平,和第十八集团军前总(通称八路军)参谋长滕代远一起,根据党中央、毛泽东主席的指示,把这步棋走得有声有色,派有力战略支队挺进豫西,就是进军河南首先采取的步骤。然而,长期以来,邓小平与挺进豫西的这段史实却鲜为人知。
