农药安全性是一个十分激动人的情绪的、一直受到社会各界团体指责、至今农药工业界为之勉强维护的主题。为了避免任何混乱,可能最好是首先将农药的定义明确下来。农药一般的定义是指用于杀死、控制或消灭任何对于人类所利用的农作物、家畜或人类环境的有害生物的化学品,这一定义范围包括了所有的以它们的用途命名的较为特殊的化合物,例如:杀虫剂、杀菌剂、除草剂、杀线虫剂、杀藻剂、杀软体动物剂、植物生长调节剂等。
