INTRODUCTION The British Coal Board has developed a procedure for predicting the gas emission from longwall workfaces - the “MRDE Prediction Method” which can be used to calculate the volume of wind during a new design. However, MRDE prediction methods use electronic computers, and users are familiar with computers. The authors consider a simplified formula that some mining engineers and ventilation personnel at home and abroad may have not yet used for MRDE prediction methods and recommend the use of calculators, both to reduce computational errors and to increase computational speed. The simplified model considers the influence of the mining layer to be 200m for the roof and 100m for the floor, and the coal seam in the affected area is the only source of gas emission.
