Walking China’s monk Xuanzang Tang dynasty, after years of untold hardships, the ultimate paradise is Varanasi If New Delhi is India’s political and economic center, Mumbai is a cultural center, Varanasi is a veritable religious center. Varanasi is the last stop on our trip to India. Varanasi, located in the middle reaches of the Ganges, was renamed Benares at the time of the British rule and was formally named Varanasi until India became independent in 1956. Mark Twain wrote in his travelogue: “Benares was older than history, older than tradition, older than legends, and even twice as old as these additions.” China’s Tang Dynasty monk Xuan Zang After years of untold hardships, and ultimately to the bliss of Western Paradise refers to Varanasi.
