蓑草是一种耐旱、耐脊、耐碱、适应性强的禾本科多年生草本植物。每年春天萌发,冬季枯死,株高40—100厘米,秆紧密,丛生而直立,具有叶片窄、纤维长、韧度大、拉力强、容易漂白等特点,是制造高级纸、人造棉和手工编织的原料。云阳是全省蓑草生产基地县之一。过去对蓑草生产重视不够,让其自生自灭,没有进行人工科学栽培,产量低,亩产只有300公斤左右。为了开发山区自然资源,发展贫困山区经济,在西南农大专家教授精心指导下,现已把蓑草生产作为多种经营开发十大项目之一,面积由1991年15000亩发展到20000亩,将年产蓑草8000吨,总产值约4000多万元。
