In a mixed population of patients with insulin-dependent and non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM and NIDDM) with retinopathy, Petty et al. Demonstrated that endothelial cell proliferation is higher than in normal individuals. They found that one diabetic had a stimulatory effect on endothelial cell proliferation in various concentrations of serum.
