This paper introduces the evolution process and development trend of IP over WDM optical network. It also discusses its survivability issues, including concepts, classification and respective advantages and disadvantages of optical layer survivability, and the necessity of joint survival mechanism between IP / MPL S layer and WDM layer Sexuality and the competition issues to be solved by such a joint mechanism, the issue of sharing of bandwidth resources and the issue of proliferation and failure
