A recent report by International Data Corporation (IDC) noted that mobile storage devices such as Iomega Corporation’s Zip and Jaz drives play an increasingly important role in the storage and backup of large enterprises. In an IDC survey entitled “Requirements for mobile storage in the enterprise environment,” end-users and IT experts at Fortune 1000 companies, governments and educational institutions in the United States expressed their attitudes and stated their use. The results show that IT managers are generally reluctant to adopt large amounts of RAID (Redundant Array Of Independent Disks) or buy more servers on the server side if the mobile storage solution is sufficient. IDC pointed out that mobile storage solutions are becoming more and more important in the enterprise. It is estimated that global mobile storage devices will reach 17.5 million by the end of this year and will steadily increase to 3,000 million units in the next three years. The reasons for users’ favor of removable storage devices can generally be attributed to the exponential growth of user data, the increasing number of remote workers, and the lack of storage devices that share multi-megabyte files.
