早期许多国家的舞蹈教育,均列入体育课程中,如:英国、美国、日本等在十九世纪中期才渐成为独立的课程,并设有舞蹈专业的学校,如:中国的北京舞蹈学院已有四十五年的历史,个人曾针对北京舞院做调查研究 (1989— 2000),该校优异的舞蹈绩效,已是世界舞蹈史重要的一页。以舞蹈教育的专业性而言,台湾或许要落后许多国家,但从舞蹈教育的普及性而言,可以说是蓬勃发展,尤其民间的所设之舞蹈班对于舞蹈的基础教育有极大的贡献;从 1945年开始陆续由海外归国的第一代舞蹈家回台湾耕耘,直到现今的百家争鸣、百花齐放的盛况,民间的舞蹈教育奠定了学校舞蹈教育的良好基础。 1978年台湾著名的舞蹈家刘凤学博士于第一届台湾建设委员会议中提出“特殊教育方案”经教育部采纳, 1981年开始实施舞蹈实验班,创“舞蹈教育”走出体育课程,独立完成“舞蹈课程”的新页,刘凤学博士的睿智、宏观对于台湾舞蹈教育的迎向世界潮流趋势有深远的影响和巨伟的贡献。 台湾舞蹈教育的普及化在学校和民间的互动和深耕之下,有一定的成果,但舞蹈教育的普及和舞蹈专业应同时发展,才能达到舞蹈教育的真正目标。
