Due to the slow pace of purchase of computers by American households, Hitachi and other PC hardware manufacturers are migrating PC technology to low-cost personal electronic devices. Hitachi has signed an agreement with Microsoft to use Microsoft’s Windows CE operating system in its palmtop computers and will design new home computer devices. Through an expanded strategic alliance agreement, Hitachi agreed to use Microsoft’s operating system for “large-scale equipment,” including 10 to 15 new products designed in the next five years. Hitachi will establish a development team to design hardware and software products for the Windows CE platform. Microsoft hopes that Windows CE system can be combined with a large number of products. The two companies immediately developed a “home multimedia station.” The station can download digital data directly from the Internet, television, satellite broadcasts, digital cameras and DVDs, and can control and store images and sounds. Although the company does not admit it, the products in this plan are the same as the digital set-top boxes that cable companies are designing.
