Objective To observe the morphological characteristics of normal rat retinal Müller cells and the difference between them and neural cells, and to explore the physiological functions of Müller cells from the morphological aspects. Methods Transmission electron microscopy was used to observe the morphological structure of retinal Müller cells in normal rats. Results Under the electron microscope, the soma of the retinal Müller cells emitted radial projections. These tough projections ran through the entire retina and occupy almost the space that the nerve cells did not occupy. Conclusion Müller cells are not only a scaffold of the retina, but also an important source of energy for ganglion cells. They are important glial cells that maintain the stability of the retina and protect neuronal synaptic transmission.
