中等职业学校的学生文化课基础都很薄弱,或者偏科严重,特别是英语学科最为突出。从中考成绩来看,中等职业学校的学生的中考英语成绩之间的差异性要明显高于普通高中。其英语成绩最高一百多分,最低才个位数,差别之大,一目了然。如果还按传统的课堂教学模式和评价标准,则不能照顾到每个学生的个体差异,不利于充分发挥学生学习的独立性和发掘他们的潜力。这种情况下,实施分层教学成为必要。
