How to improve the abilities of students writing and strengthen their awareness of the coherence of text has been a hot topic for English writing teaching. This paper explores the significance of thematic progression applied to summary writing in the process of English writing through analyzing the exercises of summary writing in New Concept English (II) based on the theory of theme and thematic progression. It aims to improve the abilities of students English writing and raise their awareness of the coherence in a text. Meanwhile, it throws new light on the study of English writing teaching.
