The currently approved methane detector is a portable handheld device. The device can be carried to a measurement site or fixed to a retractable shelf 20 feet away from the measurement site. The new method for long-range methane detection measures methane at a distance of 20 to 40 feet from the measurement site without having to use a sampler or sensor at the measurement site. Miners stand far behind the machine to measure methane near the work surface. There are two outstanding advantages of this distance measurement method over the existing measurement methods: first, productivity is increased because there is no need to stop production during the measurement; and second, since the measurement is permanently supported by the roof bolt Roof, so improve the safety conditions.
