早年读林则徐,记忆中留下两个场景,历久而不灭:虎门码头,林则徐一声令下,无数熟石灰块纷 纷投入销烟池,池内“顷刻便如汤 沸,不爨自燃”,万众欢声雷动, 洋夷失色,林则徐神色坚毅……,; 西去路上,满目荒凉,林则徐青衣 小帽,面色沉郁,坐在马车上,在 漫天大雪中颠簸蚁行……。一个壮 怀难酬、蒙冤远流的悲剧英雄形 象,就这样牢牢地定格在了如我一 样的亿万中国人心里。 林则徐发配伊犁后,情况怎 样?再往后的遭遇又如何?就没有多 少人知道了。我对林公深为钦敬, 总想知道这个顶天立地的血性男 儿,于年暮途穷之时,心境究竟如 何,遂四处搜读他的传记、年谱及 有关档案、笔记。殊不料,东西 读多了,对他本人的印象却于不觉 中起了变化。于是恍然憬悟:台前 的悲剧英雄是他的一个侧面,幕后 的落难臣子是他的另一个侧面,两 相汇合,才是真实的林公其人。
