美国著名现代派作家欧内斯特·米勒尔·海明威早期曾创作过一系列的婚姻故事,探讨男女两性的地位与关系。《白象似的群山》便是其中的一篇极具艺术感染力的经典之作,小说别具匠心的语言运用、叙事策略与人物塑造,使得后世对其的研读始终不断。本文以人际意义的角度,从韩礼德人际意义理论与《白象似的群山》,人际意义与人物语气、情态的呈现以及人际意义与人物态度、关系的微妙变化三方面,探讨了小说的人物塑造。
Earlier, Ernest Miller Ernest Hemingway, a famous American writer of modernism, had created a series of marriage stories to discuss the status and relations between men and women. “White elephants like the mountains” is one of the classics with great artistic appeal. The novel’s unique use of language, narrative strategies and characters make the study of its future generations everlasting. From the perspective of interpersonal meaning, this article explores the characters of the novel from the perspectives of Halliday’s theory of interpersonal meaning and the “mountains like white elephants”, interpersonal meaning and character tone, modality presentation, interpersonal meanings and personages’ attitudes, and subtle changes in relations shape.
