Objective: To observe the level of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) in prematurity maternal blood and its role in preterm labor. Methods: 27 cases of normal pregnancy (normal pregnancy group), 56 cases of threatened preterm labor (threatened preterm birth group), the levels of CRH in each group were determined by radioimmunoassay and compared. Results: The level of CRH increased with the number of gestational weeks and reached its peak at full-term. CRH levels in threatened preterm labor group were significantly higher than those in normal pregnancy group (P <0.05), but CRH level in preterm labor group was not significantly different from that of normal pregnancy group> 37 weeks (P> 0.05). Preterm birth group CRH levels during pregnancy were significantly higher than those of the continuing pregnancy group. CONCLUSIONS: CRH may be involved in labor initiation. The abnormal CRH may be related to premature birth. Monitoring the changes of CRH levels in pregnant women is expected to be used as a predictor of threatened preterm labor and an indicator of prognosis.
