韩愈极力排斥佛老,但被贬潮州后,却又与高僧大颠为友,这历来引起不少议论。本文认为,韩愈喜颠行为,和他的排佛行为并不矛盾。韩愈与大颠交往的主观意图,正是要通过礼待门徒颇多的名僧大颠这一有影响的人物,以宣扬唐朝天子“神圣威武仁慈”,同时显示刺史礼贤下士,治政有方,以使“蛮荒无不安泰”。韩愈被贬潮州之后,远离朋友与同僚的孤独之感,无时不在向他袭击,他与大颠交往,自鸣清高,自表推崇孔孟,继续宣扬圣人之道,这是他在逆境中寻求精神慰藉和借机鸣志的一种途径。韩愈虽同佛教势不两立,但他从不厌恶僧人,他对与他往来的和尚,都表示出要以儒改佛的决心;韩愈赠衣予大颠,赠的是儒衣,而不是僧服,其“人其人”之意由此正可一目了然。
