The author, former chief architect of the Beijing Institute of Architecture Design and Research is a master designer in China. Born in 1914 and graduated from the Japanese Waseda University in 1941, he had engaged in architectural design and teaching. In 1954, he became the chief engineer of the Beijing Institute of Architecture Design and Research and director of technique office of the Beijing Planning Bureau. He designed the Auditorium of the Chinese Peoples Political Consultative Conference (1955), the Office Building of the Beijing Committee of the Chinese Communist Party (1956), and made the planning of the Great Hall of the People and Tiananmen Square (1958). The author believes that the planning of the Tiananmen Square should first of all decide the scale of the square, as well as the purpose, size and style of the surrounding buildings. These problems have to be solved gradually through practice. The size of the square should meet not only the needs of holding mass rally and parade, but also show its magnificence and grandeur. The scale of the constructions to be built should harmonize and match with the Tiananmen Gate, the square, the memorial monument and other surrounding buildings. As to the architectural art and technique, we should make use of whatever is good in ancient, modern, Chinese and foreign architecture. The Chinese traditional architecture, particularly the imperial buildings, always takes artistic conception, rhythm, style and color as the supreme ideal. So architects should enjoy full freedom in quest of architectural art and criteria. No restriction whatsoever or personal taste of anyone should interfere in their work. It is correct for the architects to seek after individuality in their art creation, but they should not try to please the public with claptrap. Particularly they should pay attention to scientific rationalism in architectural functionalism, as well as the economic feasibility of construction technology.
