BACKGROUND & AIM: To study whether California almond has protective effects on smoking-induced DNA oxidative damage. Materials and Methods: Thirty smoke volunteers were randomly divided into 3 groups (10 in each group) and were given 0, 84 and 168g almonds daily for 28 days. During the experiment, the subjects had the same diet and smoking amount. Before and after the start of the test, fresh urine was collected for cotinine, venous blood was used for the comet assay, and 24-h urine was collected to determine 8-OH-dG. RESULTS: The comet assay showed that the DNA damage level of the 168 g/d dose group was significantly lower than that of the control group and before the test (P<0.05); the 8-OH-dG assay result showed that the 8- and 84-g/d dose groups were 8- The level of OH-dG was significantly lower than before and in the control group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Consumption of California almonds may have the effect of reducing DNA oxidative damage in smokers.
