By analyzing the NCEP1 ° × 1 ° weekly mean SST data (1982 ~ 1994), it is found that the fundamental wave W1 and the second harmonic wave W2 are the decisive harmonics in the SST annual cycle of the South China Sea. The harmonics have quasi-standing wave characteristics : The intra-seasonal oscillations in the climatic mean are not significant. In addition, the reasons for the rapid warming of the SST in the entire South China Sea before the onset of the summer monsoon are also discussed
