Mr. Yuan Yuesheng, a famous travel painter in the United States who claimed to be an enthusiastic reader in this issue, interviewed Zou Wen of our correspondent during his return to China this spring. The following is a summary record of the interview. Note: Some people think that modern art refers to the art of Western bourgeoisie. You have said that modern art originally belonged to a progressive culture. It was an art reflection of the socialist movement. The source of modern art is not in the West but in the Soviet Union. What is your basis for this? Yuan: At the beginning of this century, the modernist movement was very much linked to the critique of capitalism by the world socialist movement. We now regard modernism as a trend of thought of the bourgeoisie, which is relatively simplistic and one-sided. I was a retrospective exhibition of the Soviet Union’s 1915-1932 art movement in New York City. Mayakovski 1915 already
