The decomposition and formation of phosgene in BCl_3 under the action of pulsed CO_2 laser with or without focusing were studied. The unfocused pulsed CO 2 laser neither caused the decomposition of COCl 2 in BCl_3 nor caused the CO_ (2) and Cl_ (2) in the BCl_3 to form COCl_2. The focused pulsed CO_2 light could cause the decomposition and generation of phosgene. Discuss the mechanism of the two processes. Probably the high excited states and fragments of BCl_3 under the action of focused pulses promote these two processes, while BCl_3 itself does not change before or after the reaction, indicating that it functions as an infrared sensitizer.
