In the present study, a 12-year cohort survey of 1,295 people at the steel-making, cast iron and metalworking workshops and the bloom-rolling mill in WISCO was carried out. The results showed that the founding workers suffered from lung cancer (SMR = 2.91, P <0.05). Through the monitoring of dust concentration and silica content in the past years, the concentration of dust in foundry environment exceeded the standard in the 1960s and 1970s, and the content of free silica was up to 80%. The high incidence of lung cancer in casting workers may be related to the carcinogenesis of silica dust.
